Spotlight on Auricular Acupuncture
According to the philosophy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the body is an interconnected whole that may be broken down into several microsystems. An acupuncturist can treat the whole body just by inserting needles into one specific part of the body. In the case of auricular acupuncture, the ear is used to treat the whole body; the scalp and hands are also commonly treated microsystems in TCM.
Basics of Ear Acupuncture
Because the ear represents the entire body, it can be used to treat the same health concerns that regular acupuncture can, including stress, sleep disorders, body pain, women’s health issues, digestive trouble, or asthma/allergies, to name a few. Ear acupuncture has also gained popularity since the 70s as a way to help people recover from addiction to drugs, alcohol, cigarettes and to support those trying to lose weight. In fact, ear acupuncture is now being integrated into several detox programs across the country. Although ear acupuncture is not a replacement for an addiction recovery program, it has helped many decrease cravings and feelings of depression, anxiety, or irritability associated with withdrawal. Many patients report an instant calming effect and improved sleep patterns.
Ear Acupuncture's 5 Needle Protocol
When you come for your ear acupuncture appointment, you will receive the 5 Needle Protocol, or 5NP. These are 5 small needles inserted into points on your ear that correspond to the following organ systems: the heart/lungs, liver, and kidney. One of the remaining points corresponds to the sympathetic nervous system, and one is called “Shenmen”, which is said to be a “spirit point”. In clinical practice, it is a very relaxing point, as well as a commonly used point for the treatment of pain.
Community Acupuncture
During an ear acupuncture session, you will most likely remain seated, and the treatments may be provided in a group setting, with several people receiving treatment at once. This type of environment allows for energy to follow from person to person in a positive manner and is a peaceful setting in which to build a community without having to verbally communicate. One of the best parts about community acupuncture is that it’s affordable! If you know someone who wants to try acupuncture but just hasn’t been able to afford it, this is a way to get them in for some effective, relaxing treatment.
