Acupuncture and Herbs for Winter Blues

While Winter is a time for contemplation and restoration, many of us also experience the downside of the season, including fatigue, depression, and just feeling “out of sorts” in general. Understandably, Winter can really bring these emotions to the forefront. It’s cold outside, darker, and perhaps people are more isolated from one another, as opposed to exuberance of the summer months.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

Seasonal Blues, often called Seasonal Affective Disorder, or “SAD,” can vary in severity from person to person. Some just feel a little “off”, vaguely tired and run-down. For some, this is a more serious issue, with severe depression, sadness, lack of interest in activities they normally enjoy, and lack of desire to do anything at all. While I tell all my patients to appreciate the inherent virtues of each season, we all know that you often can’t just “will” yourself out of depression; often, it helps to have someone there to help.

Role of Acupuncture and Herbs for SAD

Acupuncture and herbs can help rebalance the body in the case of emotional upheaval, stress, fatigue, or insomnia. In many cases, depression results due to a stagnation in the life energy of the body, or qi. Using acupuncture and herbs to move qi and clear blockages in the acupuncture meridians can help to balance your emotions. Many people who have consistent acupuncture treatment to address emotional concerns report feeling more in control of their emotions, feel less worry, stress, anxiety, and report improved sleep.

Whether you experience stress, anxiety and/or insomnia only in the Winter or on regular basis, there are many ways that Chinese medicine can help. Your practitioner will work with you to discern the specifics of your situation and may recommend acupuncture, herbal medicine, bodywork, nutritional adjustments, and/or counseling.
